EARLY MORNING THREE ALARM FIRE IN APARTMENT BUILDING

Sunday, April 1, 2007

Just before 0730 hrs. this morning, the building assignment went out for the Merion Trace Apts.
in company 37’s local. This brought in companies 37 (Upper Darby), 26 (Highland Park),
36 (Cardington- Stonehurst), and Tower Ladder 74. As apparatus went responding,
Fire Board advised the units that they were receiving numerous calls. Engine 37-1
arrived on location to find a four story apartment building with heavy smoke and fire showing
from multiple apartments on the third floor. 37 command then immediately requested the
second alarm, bringing in the balance of station 74, as well as company 20 (Garrettford Drexel Hill).
Because of the amount of fire and the fact that numerous occupants were trapped on the
balconies, UD-11 (Chief Johnson) requested that a third alarm be struck, as well as a full
ambulance box. When the Tower Ladder arrived on location they were directed to the
corner of Merrion Terrace and Leighton, and ordered to begin rescue operations. The crew of the
Tower Ladder, consisting of Capt. Fiorito and FF Lynch, threw a 35’ extension ladder to the
third floor on side C of the apartment building and started to bring the occupants down to safety.
The Chauffeur of the Tower Ladder, Lt. Bera, set the Tower up for aerial operations, and
started to ventilate the roof. As Engines 74-1 and 74-2 arrived on location, their crews were split
to help with ventilation as well as the rescue operation. Once all of the occupants were
safely removed from the fire building, the crew from 74 set up RIT equipment on the C side of
the fire building and stood by as the second FAST team. Luckily there was no need for RIT services.
The crew from 74 was then split again to help with overhaul of the fire floor, and to help restore
all of the apparatus on scene. While the crews were operating on the roof, one of our members
was injured. The member injured his back while removing roofing, and was transported to
DCMH by the Medics. The Fire Fighter is back home resting now, and luckily did not cause
any permanent injury. The injured Fire Fighter, as well of the Officers and Members of the
Primos-Secane-Westbrook Park Fire Company, would like to thank all of those who were concerned.

returning from another call, was the first piece on location. The crew of Engine 44 advanced an
1 3/4" line into the dwelling for extinguishment. The Tower Ladder, responding from the area of
