CHIMNEY FIRE AND VEHICLE INTO A HOUSE

On Saturday evening, February 25th, Companies 20 (Garrettford-Drexel Hill), 74 and 36
(Cardington-Stonehurst) were dispatched to the 4000 block of Rosemont Avenue in Drexel Hill for a
reported chimney fire. 20 Command arrived to confirm a working chimney fire and put Engine 20 in
service with a line to the roof down the chimney to extinguish the fire via Ladder 20. Tower 74’s crew
was put into service on the second floor checking for extension of the fire. The fire was contained to
the chimney and 74 was returned in about 45 minutes. Tower 74 and Foam Unit 74-2 along with 74-9 made
the response. Later into the morning hours, Company 74 was dispatched to the area of Bunting Lane
and Oak Avenue for a reported gas leak. As Engine 74-1 and Foam Unit 74-2 were responding, Fireboard
advised that the gas leak was coming from the meter in front of the house due to a car that had gone
out of control and had run into the house. Crews from 74-1 and 74-2 shut off the gas service at the meter
and made investigations to see if gas had leaked into any of the surrounding houses. After PECO
had arrived and the car had been removed from the area Company 74 was available. Crews
were on location for about 30 minutes.

FIRST-DUE WORKING FIRE AT DENNYS

Early Sunday morning, January 20th, Companies 74, 20 (Garrettford-Drexel Hill) 03 (Clifton Heights)
and Engine 36 (Cardington-Stonehurst) were dispatched to the Denny’s Restaurant on Baltimore
Pike for a reported building fire. Police arrived to find a working kitchen fire inside with heavy smoke
throughout. Engine 74-1 under the command of FF David Graham arrived to find smoke from the roof
and led off with a one-inch and three-quarter handline through the rear into the kitchen and made a
knock on the fire. 1st Asst. Chief Jernegan (74-9a) added Ladder 26 (Highland Park) for the Rapid
Intervention Team. Ladder 20, Quint 3 and Tower 74 all were put in service to the roof where it was
discovered that the fire had not extended. The fire was held primarily to the kitchen area and companies
were made available in about an hour. Command from 74 was held by Chief John Rankin (74-9)
who was also Incident Commander. Crew of Engine 74-1 consisted of Past Chief/Chauffeur
T. Micozzie and FF D. Graham, Tower crew consisted of Lt./Chauffeur M. Fiorito and FF’s K. Rankin,
B. Lynch, D. Falkenstein and N. Gerlacher. Thanks to Tower 44 (Springfield) and Engine 8
(Prospect Park) for covering 74 while crews were in service.

SPRINGFIELD ROAD WORKING FIRE

Late Saturday evening, February 18th, Companies 03 (Clifton Heights) and 74 were dispatched to the
400 block of Springfield Road for a reported house fire. Clifton Heights Police arrived on location
with smoke showing from a three-story taxpayer type building. Crews from 03 stretched attack lines
while crews from 74 vented the building and conducted searches. Tower 74’s main was used to gain
access to the roof. The fire was held primarily to a third-floor rear bedroom. Command from 74 was
held by Chief John Rankin (74-9).

74 GOES TO LANSDOWNE FOR RIT

Early Tuesday afternoon, February 15th, Company 74 was dispatched to assist Company 19
(Lansdowne) and numerous other companies operating at a working structure fire in Lansdowne
Borough. Tower 74 under the command of UDFD Captain Tim Boyce (UD-12) stood fast as the
rapid intervention team while companies battled the fire in a one-story auto-sales/auto repair facility.
Tower 74 remained on scene for about an hour until the fire was placed under control. The crew of Tower
74 consisted of Captain T. Boyce and Firefighters J. Miller, J. Heffernan, D. Richio, N. Gerlacher, V. Berrardocco
and K. Rankin. District Chief John Rankin (74-9) was also on location. Companies operating at the scene
included Co. 19 (Lansdowne), 24 (East Lansdowne), 16 (Yeadon), 20 (Garrettford-Drexel Hill), 42
(Collingdale #2), 03 (Clifton Heights) and Co. 74. Thanks to Company 44 (Springfield) for sending
Tower 44 for the cover assignment while Tower 74 was committed on scene.

SNOW HITS SECANE

Late Saturday evening into Sunday morning, February 11th and 12th, more that 12 inches of
snow blanketed the entire southeastern Pennsylvania area and areas surrounding. During the
snowfall, five alarms were answered by 12 volunteers manning Engine 74-1 and Tower 74. The crew
of the Engine consisted of Chauffeur/Lt. J. Bera, FF J. Mulholland, FF B. Lynch, FF D. Graham and
PFF’s D. Richio and J. Hetalo. Manning Tower 74 were Chauffeur/Lt. M. Fiorito, FF K. Rankin, FF M. Beese
and PFF M. Griglione. Also responding to all alarms via Chief’s Vehicle was District Chief J. Rankin (74-9).
Thanks to all members who gave up their Saturday evening to help out.

CANDIDATE FOR GOVERNOR BILL SCRANTON VISITS 74

On Wednesday evening, February 1st, Bill Scranton, a candidate for the Republican nomination for
Governor of Pennsylvania held a "Town Meeting" at Station 74. Mr. Scranton has held several
of these types of meeting in locations across Pennsylvania in his "Road to Reform Tour".
Mr. Scranton gave a description of his running platform and fielded questions from residents of the area
in the audience. All of us at 74 wish the best of luck to Mr. Scranton on his
bid to be the next Governor of Pennsylvania.
