INTENSE MOMENTS DURING A TWO ALARMER ON THE EAST END
Monday, July 24, 2006

Around 1150 Hrs., the tones dropped for companies 36 (Cardington-Stonehurst Fire Co.), 37 (Upper Darby Fire Co.)
and Medic 103-7 (DCMH Paramedics) for 7035 Guilford Rd. for the reported building fire. Initial reports were
of an air conditioner on fire. Upper Darby 9 (Department Chief Cubler) arrived and reported smoke showing
from the 2nd floor. Chief Cubler quickly had the assignment upgraded to a working incident. Upper Darby
9-C (Deputy Chief Shuster) then requested that the Tower be added to the assignment for the FAST truck.
Squirt 36 arrived on location and quickly established a water supply and then stretched an 1 3/4" attack line
into the fire building. The crew from Quint 37 laddered the building and then began to open up the rear of
the fire building. While the crews were starting the interior attack fire board advised command that they were
receiving reports of an 8 year old girl unaccounted for, however the girl was pulled out of the fire building
earlier by her cousin. Just as the interior crews were getting a knock on the fire, Upper Darby 9-C said the
words that every Fire Fighter does not want to hear, that he had a Fire Fighter down on the second floor.
The crew of the Tower wasted no time getting to the downed Fire Fighter and quickly escorting him out of the
fire building. The Fire Fighter suffered from a knee injury, but luckily had no life threatening injuries.
Upper Darby 9-C then called for the second alarm, bringing in company 26 (Highland Park Fire Co.), and
had Engine 74-1 relocate to station 37. Command placed the fire under control around 1200. The officers
and members of the Primos-Secane-Westbrook Park fire company wish the injured Fire Fighter a speedy recovery.

74-1 SEES WORK IN FERNWOOD
Sunday, July 23, 2006

At 1434 hrs. the tones dropped for companies 74, 26 (Highland Park Fire Co.), and Medic 103
(DCMH Paramedics) for number 30 1/2 William Street, in the Township’s Fernwood section, for a
building fire. The call was located in company 36’s (Cardington Stonehust Fire Co.) district; however,
because company 36 and 37 (Upper Darby Fire Co.) were on another building fire on Ruskin Ln.,
companies 74 and 26 were dispatched. As the Engine and Ladder 26 went responding, Fire Board advised
that they were receiving several calls for the fire. The Medic unit arrived first and advised that they had
heavy smoke showing from all three floors. Station 36 had a crew in house for Engine 36-2 and were
advised by Upper Darby 9-C (Shuster) to respond to William Street instead of Ruskin Ln., UD9-C also
requested Rescue 20 (Garrettford-Drexel Hill Fire Co.) for the FAST truck. Once 36-2 arrived on location
they advanced an 1 3/4" attack line into the fire building. Ladder 26 arrived and put the aerial to the
roof then performed the primary search, while 26-1 laid a supply line to 36-2 and then backed up the
crew on the attack line. As crews cleared up from the Ruskin Ln. fire, they were redirected to the William
Street fire. Engine 74-1 arrived and performed the secondary search. The fire was contained to the
first floor apartment of the building. No civilians nor fire fighters were injured during the fire. Engine
74-1 was in service for just under two hours.

(DCMH Medics) were alerted to the 600 block of south Oak Ave, at the Primos Exxon Station, for an
Industrial Rescue. As Engine 74-1 and the Tower went responding, Fire Board notified the crews that
there was a report of a woman locked inside of the bathroom at the gas station. Upper Darby 9C (Shuster)
arrived on location and confirmed the same. Deputy Chief Shuster then held the assignment to station 74
apparatus. The crews from both the Engine and the Tower worked to free the woman from the bathroom.
Once the Woman was free, she was turned over to the DCMH Medics for medical evaluation.

THURSDAY NIGHT DRILL
 Thursday, July 20, 2006

For the thursday night drill the members went over something we rarely use: Drafting Operations.
The members took both the Tower and Engine 74-2 over to the Primos Elementary School to review
the seldomly used operation. The crew from Engine 74-2 set up the portable tank, wich was fed from
a nearby hydrant, and set up the Engine for drafting. The Tower crew set up the Tower for aerial operations
then stretched some 3 1/2" supply line from the Engine to the Tower. The goal of the drill was for the Engine,
through drafting, to supply enough water to the Tower to support an exterior attack. The drill gave the mebers
a good chance to see how a drafting operation works. During the drill several members also had the opertunity
to get in some Tower traing. The members practiced operating the Tower as well as flowing water from the
monitor guns mounted on the bucket of the Tower.
