ROOM AND CONTENTS FIRE ON SYCAMORE AVE

Around 2300 hours on Monday evening, March 20th, Companies 74, 20 (Garrettford-Drexel Hill), 03
(Clifton Heights) and 36 (Cardington-Stonehurst) were dispatched to the 500 block of Sycamore Avenue
 for a reported dwelling fire. Upper Darby Police units arrived on location and reported heavy smoke showing
 from the second floor of a two-story row dwelling. Ladder 20 arrived and began to stretch an attack line as
 Engine 74-1 arrived to begin ventilation on the second floor of the dwelling along with members of Engine
20-1. Engine 20-1 and 03-2 established water supply and stretched an additional handline into the dwelling.
 Companies made a quick knock of the fire and were available in about an hour.

TWO ALARM TAXPAYER FIRE

Early Monday morning, just after 0400 hours, companies 20 (Garrettford-Drexel Hill), 74, and Squrt 36
 (Cardington-Stonehurst) were dispatched to the 4200 block of Ferne Boulevard for a reported
apartment fire. As units were going responding, police advised that heavy fire was showing from
 the second floor of a taxpayer. Engine 20-1 went into service with an attack line and began
 an aggressive attack on the fire. Tower 74 was ordered to the roof of the building to begin ventilation.
Crews from Ladder 20 and Squrt 36 also assisted Tower 74 on the roof and with search and rescue.
Company 26 (Highland Park) along with Rescue 58 (Bon-Air) were added to the assignment. By the
 first 20-minute mark, the bulk of the fire was knocked down and crews continued to make progress
 on the fire and ventilate. The fire was placed under control in under an hour and crews made themselves
 available as they took up from the scene. Units on location from 74 included Tower 74 with the crew of
 Deputy Chief G. McAfee, Past Chief T. Micozzie and FF K. Rankin, Engine 74-1 with the crew of Lt. M. Fiorito,
 FF D. Falkenstein and FF B. Lynch. Also on location from 74 was Asst. Chief M. Jernegan (74-9a) and
Chief J. Rankin (74-9). Thanks to Company 03 for providing cover to 74’s local while in service.

HURRICANE KATRINA RESPONDERS HONORED AT 74
 Sunday, March 12, 2006

On Saturday, March 11th, U.S. Congressman Curt Weldon along with Station 74 honored numerous
 first-responders from all across the area in addition to several first-responders from the area
raveged by Hurricane Katrina in late August. Also, four members of the Upper Darby Township Fire Department
were recognized for their part in assisting with the victims of Hurricane Katrina. These members were as
 follows; Deptuty Chief James Johnson, Firefighter William Norris, Firefighter Dan McGardle and Firefighter
Keith Yashin. Also, Company 74 welcomed this weekend the four firefighters that were directly involved
in rescue and recovery efforts in the New Orleans area. The four rescuers were all Chief-level officers
from areas that were severely devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The men from Louisiana stayed
at the station and rode-along with the company for their nights at the station. Special thanks to all members
 of 74 for both getting the station ready for our visitors, taking care of the cooking of meals and for
entertaining the guests from Louisiana. During the awards presentation, Congressman Weldon
presented a check to the first-responders for $440,000 for relief efforts.
