UPPER DARBY FIRE DEPARTMENT STATION 74
"Ever Ready"
Primos-Secane Westbrook Park Fire Company
ABOUT US
The birth of our Fire Company was brought about by a group from the
Westbrook Park Civic Association. The Association had been asked by the
Upper Darby Council to considerforming a 5th Volunteer Fire Company to serve
the Westbrook Park, Secane, Primos, and Penn Pines areas.
A committee was appointed and met in August, 1954 at which time the
"Primos-Secane Westbrook Park Fire Company" was formed. The necessary
papers were drawn up and a charter was applied for and granted on April 1, 1955.

On May 3, 1955 the first meeting of the Fire Company was held,
and the Articles of Incorporation were accepted by the Committee;
Charles R. Vanderslice was elected the first President and Frank Z. Russel
was chosen as the first Fire Chief. From that moment on, the wheels of progress
started to move. Burn Brae Hospital allowed the Company the use of their
barn as a fire station; Swarthmore Fire Company gave the new Fire Company its
first Fire Engine-a 1928 American LaFrance Pumper.

Also the company purchased a 1940 Autocar Ladder Truck from Darby Fire Patrol # 2.

At this point it was decided that an equipment truck was needed.
A 1947 Milk Truck was purchased and the men converted it to suit their needs.
Many hard hours were spent raising money for the purchase of items needed
to properly equip the trucks. Finally a 1939 American La France Pumper was assigned
to the new company by the Township of Upper Darby. The addition of this apparatus made the
Primos-Secane Westbrook Park Fire Company a full fledged Engine and Truck Company.
On March 1, 1957, at 12:01 A.M., the first fire call was received.
The first fire extinguished by the newly formed Fire Crew was located at the site which
was to become the grounds for the new fire station.

SECANE AVENUE

ASHLAND AVENUE
On August 15, 1958 at Secane and Ashland Avenues,
the ground was broken for the new fire station.

On January 15, 1959 a new American La France Pumper was assigned,

and on January 16, 1959 the Company moved into a beautiful new station.

The members were now confronted with the task of paying for the building and its furnishings.
They sponsored scrap drives, newspaper drives, carnivals, and bingo.
Bonds were sold to help defray part of the expenses.
In 1960 a new Ford Rescue truck was purchased,

and in 1964 another new American La France Pumper, and from
Downingtown Fire Company an Autocar Quad was purchased.

In 1968 a new addition was completed, consisting of a meeting room and kitchen
on the first floor, recreation and television room on the second floor.

On November 17, 1972 we took delivery of a new 85' Snorkel.

In September, 1975 construction of a fourth bay was started and completed in 1976,
all work was done by members. This addition accommodated the Snorkel and provided
much needed space for storage, Board of Directors Room and Chiefs Office.

In February 1979 a new American LaFrance Pumper was received from
the Township to replace our original 1959 pumper.

In the Spring of 1984, a new American LaFrance Foam Pumper
was delivered to replace the other of the original Pumpers.
In 1989 the Fire Company Purchased a Ford / E-One Rescue
truck to haul some its specialized equipment.
In 1998 the company saw the need for a Chiefs Vehicle.
A 1996 Ford Explorer was purchased and outfitted as the Chiefs Car.

In late 2000 an American La France Eagle Engine was delivered

along with a 2000 Sutphen 95' Tower Ladder.

In late 2002 the company realized that there was a need to build a new firehouse.
The Ashland Avenue Station was renovated and an addition was placed on the rear
of the station to house a District Court. As construction for the New Station progressed,
so did the renovations on the old station. In the summer of 2004 when the New Firehouse
was ready to be occupied, the old station became the Primos Library and a
Sub-Station for the Delaware County Paramedics.

Today the Fire Company consists of 40 Senior Members, as well as 2 men in the
service of our country. The Fire Crew under the leadership of Chief Micheal Jernegan,
drills and attends classes to attain a high degree of skill and efficiency.
The Board of Directors, Executive Officers, Fire Crew Officers, and
all the Committees combined together form a special union of men and women
that the community should be proud to have,
as one of the finest Fire Companies in Delaware County.
On the alert 24 hours a day to protect Life, Limb, and Property.

The Primos-Secane Westbrook Park Fire Company is living up to our motto -
"Ever Ready"
